Measure, Measure Your Life In Love, 2001-12-28, 10:29 a.m.

It's amazing what a year does. Someone just sent an e-mail to a list that I'm on saying that, and it's a topic I've been considering for the last few weeks. This has been a landmark year, marked by many ups and downs. This time last year no one would suspect what would happen over the year. It makes me hope for a peaceful and relaxing year with no surprises.

This time last year I was jobless. We were poor - very poor. Everyone was healthy. Now I have a job. We have money. We rent a new house, having been flooded out of our old one. We lost someone we still need. We have gained so much over this year and lost so much as well. Over one year so much has happened to change so many things.

Did you ever think that at this moment, someone's life is being changed? While you are reading this, someone is falling in love. Someone is being attacked. Someone is finding out they are well. Someone is finding out they are ill. Someone is getting married. Someone is being buried. There is so much that can change a life. And each act ripples and changes the lives of others. So many things can change a life completely. It's terrifying if you consider that with each decision you make. Taking a job means someone else will not get it and their hunt continues. Someone becomming ill changes the world around them as the focus of their lives and the lives of those around them as they scramble to find a way to make it all better. Each thing you do changes your path, for better or worse. Yet, how can you stop choosing? For giving up your right to choose is to give up life. And yet, giving up this right to choose is making yet another choice that influences not just your life but those around you. It's all a cycle and one that cannot be avoided or altered. I'm currently watching 'Mists of Avalon' and the statement was made that you cannot live another persons fate. You have your own life, your own fate, your own cycle to live.

And the years pass, one by one, bringing us joy, sorrow, pain, heartache, laughter and tears. It's been a hell of a year.
