Equality, 2003-04-09, 11:24 a.m.

Yesterday was tech*splorations. We toured the oil companies offices, went to a practice drilling rig and had a great time. I could go on about bus mixups and the cold, but I won't.

What I will talk about is the sexism that is so rampent in the engineering world. So often, people were refered to not as people but as men. Or Guys. Not people or females. One guy even made the comment that 'gotta get out of this room - to many females in here' One girl made the comment that of their 214 engineers and techs, a large number were female - 30. The major oil company has 4 female engineers out of 80 or more. Out at the roughneck site, it was all males. It's scary.

My girls need more exposure to these career fields. They need to know they can do it. They already come from a working class background - they don't need anything else against them. They need to have more exposure to these fields so they can bring up the numbers and be role models themselves. So needed.

Had it been a room of boys, noone would have commented. It hurt.

I want equality.
