Meeting a mentor, 2003-04-04, 6:45 a.m.
Today, my tech*splorations girls meet their role model. She's an engineer who works in the oil industry. We've tried to meet before, but first we had a storm and then I was out.
The girls are so excited, as am I. We're touring the oil companys offices, having lunch and then going out to the roughneck site for some hands on. I'm really excited. They then have to do a report on the Engineering industry, as well as the Oil Industry and discuss the role that womyn play in it. They present to all the tech*splorations girls from around the province and listen to what they have to say. With that as well, they sleep over, swim and hang out and generally have a good time while interacting with girls from other schools. Execpt for the sleeping over bit, I'm really excited about it.
I think this program is amazing. Not only do the girls get to interact with their peers from other schools, they also get to learn about non-traditional careers for womyn. They even get to learn what non-traditional means. It's exciting.
Yay for feminism for young girls. More is needed but it's a start. And all the boys are jealous. Keehee.
